Angelique Kidjo: Wow!

This Harmony show just kept getting better. Sunday was nice for me, the crowds were thinned out enough to make traversing the Harmonyworld a breeze, and the acts just kept getting better and better.

I've seen Angelique Kidjo before, and she always puts on a phenomenal show, but, this Harmony appearance was by far the best ever. I dunno, it could be cause I was so incredibly blissed out from having such a wonderful weekend, but no, I think Angelique is a world class performer, and she and her band pulled out all stops for a long and enlightening set of pure world infotainment.

She finished the set with a stage full of audience, allowing dance-offs and drum interaction and still ne'er a beat was missed.

Mystic Beat Lounge: Where community meets art and fun

The Mystic Beat Lounge crew knows how to throw a party. I previously spoke of how cleverly they redesigned the cavernous Grace Pavilion into an ultra-cool and seemingly intimate club. That was Friday. Saturday workers transformed the space throughout the day, the decorations and acoutrements doubled, and now they were ready to really show us what a party can be like.

A cacophonic frenzy of multi-media entertainment, that's what I'm gonna call Techno Tribal night. Take Heavyweight Dub Champion, add an operatic fire troupe, circus airialists and the best of the best live video show, combined with lasers, all those incredible layers of decorations, and an exquisitely timed infusion of all these elements, and together you have the genius of what a well-learned collective of artists can create.

The level of production that it takes to pull off such an event is almost beyond my comprehension, but I know Mystic Beat meets every Tuesday since like forever ago and that my friend Raychill has been hard at work on this particular event for the past few months. It was quite a treat to be based in their production trailer for my blogging. I never did find the official press tent, but it was a great opportunity to meet and hang with this finely tuned production crew throughout the weekend. http://www.mysticbeatlounge.com/

I had the opportunity to meet and greet the video artist, Brien Rullman, in the hours following the show. He's a pioneer video jockey, he's been practicing his craft for some sixteen years, long before people had even conceived of doing live video art. Rullman does performs live video art for his living, and has for years. He said he learned "just by trying things" and that the availability of newer, cheaper technology has made this artform much more accessible to the general public. I think I'm gonna start "trying things" when I get home.

Arrested Development: 17 years later...

Festie gods must a been smilin' pon me today...no traffic, easy parking, easy stroll to the stage, and there is Arrested Development just starting their set. I felt lucky on the timing, as it was an all night of festivities kinda evening for me. I was too tired, but I just can't stand missing out on a good time...

So yea, Arrested Development...I think I was saved by their first record when I was a teenager...just pure conscious positive hip hop...they were waaaay before their time. Apparently they've reunited, and it feels good.

Pure sweet dancilicious vibes on this one, I had to remind myself to stop groovin to take some pics. The crowd was lovin' this one, it seemed we all knew all the words, though Speech and crew did also debut some new tunes off their upcoming record...

Speech spoke about unfair imprisonment and asked us all to take some time to check http://www.freedebbie.org/

The band members were sweethearts backstage, taking time to meet and connect with friends and fans. This is a must see band...good times, good times, and, a positive message to boot...can't beat that...

John Courage

I keep finding great things in my camera that I forgot to write about yesterday. This is John Courage (the curly haired one) and he put on a great show. The music is original folksy western swing which was definitely a different sound from a lot of what I heard this weekend. John has a superb voice and an excellent lyrical style.

Ron the Magician

Friday night as I stood around waiting for the boyfriend to conquer the men's room line, I saw a magician walking up to various folks in the crowd performing silly tricks using LED lights and occasionally creating small puffs of fire. This is Ron. I saw Ron again on Sunday while I was wandering between stages, this time onstage in the Magical Playground. His magic show has a great deal of community involvement and really seemed to keep the audience amused if not entranced, kids and adults alike.

Women's Council of Elders

I'm pretty sure I got this one right, the Women's Council of Elders was on the Goddess stage providing us with a taste of many different cultures, singing selections from various lands. Today's schedule seemed to be off based on hitting a few different stages and not seeming to be able to find the folks that were set to be on. It was still a lot of fun though and gave me a chance to go wander around and see what was happening in other areas of the festival

Baby Seal Club on the Kids Stage?!

i ran into these festive cats last night, they said they were playing on the kids stage today, told me that was one of the better stages of the venue, i haven't made it there yet, but these guys seemed like they were fun...baby seal club, on the kids stage, sounds a bit like an oxymoron...they handed me some cool schwag, perhaps there will be somethin in it for you if you make it there...they say the stage area is grassed and shady...sounds like heaven right now and me thinks these guys are gonna be entertaining...

JGB

JGB featuring Melvin Seals kicked off the day
with "The Gospel According to Jerry". Starting out with some funk-filed gospel and winding through other favorites, JGB got the day started by getting everyone up and moving. I had to find some shade after this show so I could cool down from dancing. It was a hot one out there today!

More Fun to be had...

oh my goddess, lots of words to share, it's been nonstop fun and interaction...ready for more? i'm preppin to brave the traffic, hope to have a clear onsite connect today...i'm enclosing a sunrise pic of yours truly, enjoying a sip of organic Frey Cabernet...who would of thunk that was gonna be tasty at dawn, it went well with the funky ras hip hop beats that were bumpin at the bus scene. gotta go, arrested development is playing. i bumped their first cd so many times i wore the grooves out back in the day, i'm pretty excited to check them live for the first time.

i'm aiming to let the people speak today, so, if you've got something to say, hail me up...

Damian Marley...check one two

Damian Marley...bias alert, I really love seeing Marleys play. I'm pretty sure I had something clever to say about how great the show was last night, and I dutifully holed up in the production cargo trailer of Mystic Beat land to post up those oh so clever words, but somehow exactly the time I was posting the wifi failed, or the gods intervened, or whatever but I lost all my precious words and my sense of enjoyment for this whole blog-on-the-spot thing...ah, but I digress...partly due to the lack of sleep, perhaps in another post I'll discuss what was happening till way past sunrise...
Anyway, ahem...the Marleys...I speak in plural cause it's always a whole group, extended-family kind of event when the kids of the great one come to play...these guys run a really tight ship production-wise. Backstage at the mainstage for the first time, I run into lots of family-friends from previous festivals and Marley shows. There's definitely a crew that shows up, and it was nice to see some familiar faces. I know a guy who works security for Damian, he's one of the people that walks in front to make sure people don't get too friendly and grabbie and that Damian can cruise right up to stage without having to hail everyone up personally.

I still find it intriguing and entertaining that there's a bunch of people willing to stand by a bus in hopes that somehow they will either be connected enough or charming enough or lucky enough to get called in for a personal meeting. Everyone's got a story, but I digress...
Alright, clearly there are too many details to write about for my sleep-deprived over-stimulated with fun and entertainment brain...one thing that seems important to mention though is that Damian's appearance is directly connected to the fundraising side of Health and Harmony Festival. There's an orphanage being built in Ethiopia, there's lots of information at http://www.theworldfamily.org/ and clever attendents can download the Harmony Fest album at http://www.giveback.net/ Definitely worth checking out...as is today's lineup. I think I'm missing the great Jefferson Starship just now as I type. I'm sure I'll see you're smiling faces soon!

"Could You Be Love"

Ah, Damian Marley. Big-time headliner, he's here at Harmony through some sort of connection to The Yemegnushal Community Center in Gar Dima, Ethiopia, an orphanage being built through The Worl Family Ethiopian Orphans and Medical Care.

http://www.theworldfamily.org/

He blazed through an almost two hour set, and though I could only see the first line of people from my backstage vantage point, I could feel and hear the crowd marking his every word and move.

Jr. Gong always puts on a pure fire set, and this one was no exception. He even debuted a new song, and, judging from the lit up cell phones and myriad of video cameras both front and backstage, you'll probably be able to catch pieces of this set soon on a videoshare site near you.

Til then, a couple of pics...

(well, i was pasting pics till the server blinked...here i go again...)

argh, three tries in, and Heavyweight Dub Champions are onstage...I'll try again later

My favorite part of festivals...the spontaneous drum circle

While I was perusing the food vendors for a tasty lunch treat, I came across a drum circle. Well, more like a drum triangle as pictured.

When I happened by about three hours later, this group had grown like crazy and was seriously rocking out! Assuming you can actually hear the audio that follows (or go check it out at http://harmonyfestival.blogspot.com/), you'll see what I mean. I just love the fact that a group of total strangers with different backgrounds and skill levels can come together and improvise such an amazing performance.

Dr Solar and the Magical Playground

The kiddie area of the festival, the Magical Playground, hasn't gotten the attention it deserves in blogland. To be honest, I was cutting through looking for a bathroom that didn't have a billion people in line as Kat mentioned earlier. When I was cutting though I came across the scene in the image; loads of little kids crowded around a gypsy-style trailer. Well, technically it was a scene like five minutes before, but you get the idea. The reason for this crowd is Dr Solar and his "Good Time, Sunshine, Traveling Medicine Show". I haven't seen someone with a presence like his in a long time, let alone real life. So if you're tired of beer, not feeling the artist on the main stage, whatever, go check out the Magical Playground and maybe they'll let you join in on a craft session or two.

The Devil Makes Three

The Devil Makes Three rocked as always with their combo of folk, bluegrass, and this amazing vibe that makes you feel like you just woke up on the barroom floor... again. Despite the feedback-inducing ghost haunting Cooper's guitar, the bloody nose, and a snapped banjo string, the show was excellent in all ways. A huge crowd gathered at the People's Stage and though there weren't a majority dancing, those that were were in it with zeal. The frontman was taking suggestions for the set-list and certainly didn't let the crowd down. We heard some old favorites and some new destined-to-be hits. I've been keeping an eye on this trio for a few years now, and they just keep getting bigger and better.

Cipes and The People...from MTV to Santa Rosa

lots to go see and do right now...more later cause I gotta go catch damian marley

Step Forward with a healing in the Wellness Temple

I stepped into this building for the bathroom, alas there were some thirty women in line, and it looked like the men's was starting to be shanghai'd with the impatient tinklers to be. Nothing healing bout having to wait in a long line when you gotta go...still, I sucked it up and wandered around the booths, ranging from something like the Rosecrucian Order to Ionic Foot Baths. There are asian healers who claim to be the best at their miracle healings, and people are lined up with both feet in three different foot bathing booths. The water looks a bit like super-green algae, but, judging from the numbers of folks willing to invest a half-hour in a foot soak, this is a popular offering in the Wellness Temple.
I'm drawn to Step Forward Foot Corrections cause my feet hurt, and after a bit of waiting for others to hear the spiel, am directed to a chair behind the table to have prints made of my feet. I've been having ongoing problems with blisters, and a warm day wandering the lengths of this festival aren't helping, so I'm already intrigued with the possibility of relief.
Kevin Ekerson has been in orthotics for some 16 years, he said, cutting his teeth on making specialized ski boots for the elite of the elite ski masters...cut to the chase, my arches are collapsed and I've got too much pressure on my thyroid point in my foot, these orthotics will apparently retrain my feet to better support my body. I find myself curiouser and curiouser, but I'm not quite committed enough to put $220 on my credit card. Still, I've been shopping for shoe solutions for years, and maybe this guy who usually only sells to podiatrists is right. I take a brochure and promise to visit the website http://www.kevinelkerson.com/ for more info. Before I leave he asks me if I've been to burning man and tells me he's got a special slideshow hidden on the website...more intrigue indeed.
Another loop round the building, yep, there's still a super long line for the bathroom, and I find myself at the Berkeley Psychic Institute booth, which is offering $5 readings (they'll throw in a free healing too) I'm wondering if there gonna tell me I really should use the restroom to gain instant healing, but instead I'm told about bands of energy around my body and my neck, and that my female/male energy is conflicting with pink & black colors. One of the front people tells my psychic "it's time to take the next step" under her next breath and after looping about a bit in conversation my psychic tells me I can address this properly by attending workshops or taking classes at the Institute. I've got stuff going on in my fourth chakra he says, and I try to figure out if that's where my bladder is cause this waiting is getting increasingly uncomfortable.

Getting In...Day Two

Traffic was backed up nearly to 101 at 1:00 pm and it took some 30 minutes to get from there to parking. I recommend public transport, carpooling, or one of those nifty Segways...

Lovelutions with Fantuzzi

Take one part jam band...well maybe two or three, mix in a little salsa, and a shake of tribal sounds and you've got Lovelutions with Fantuzzi. If you want to dance, the Goddess Stage seems to be the place to come shake it.

http://www.fantuzzimusic.com/

Mayan Self-Care for Women with Madeleina Boldue

During this session in the Lotus Tent, Madeleina gets the ladies in touch with their feminine side with the ultimate goal of recentering yourself. And I mean that in the most literal sense, she instructs on the hows and whys of adjusting your own uterus. Taught as a self-healing tool, this is a common practice in Mayan culture where midwives "recenter" you to help deal with issues from PMS to disorientation to pain. If you're interested in instruction, Madeleina can be found practicing this as well as herbalism and other Mayan cultural healing techniques in Berkeley.

On Funny Hats

I'm harping on the Midwest thing, I know, but bear with me. Before a three week long cold snap in Chicago that had us playing rock/paper/scissors for who had to go get the mail, we would just bundle up and trounce around the city oblivious to cold. After the three-week cold snap, I finally got fed up enough to move out here. But there is one thing I do miss about the chilly climes- the freedom to wear funny hats in the name of warmth. You could perch a dead wolverine on your head, and no one would would bat an eyelash, as long as it looked snug and toasty.

In front of the Ambiotica Lounge, there is a charming young lass selling some of the funniest hats I've seen in years. They put me in mind of furbies, the fetishists who dress up like animals before they...uh........well, I won't speculate on what they do, but the hats are tremendous. They are all fur-lined, reversible-including the ears- and they are some of the most comfortable items I've ever slapped on my head. I don't recall the name of this woman's business- something like 'Foxy Hats' or "Sexy Foxy Hats' or perhaps "Hat-Wearing Sexy Foxes" - whatever, the point is, after chatting with her a bit I find that THIS IS WHAT SHE DOES FOR A LIVING. She travels from festival to festival selling her wares, and she must do a good turn of business, because I'm seeing them all over the fairgrounds. At $65 bucks a pop, they may be a bit pricey for something you might not wear on your morning commute- this not being the frigid Great White North, but I'm tickled that she makes this work for her. God, I love California.

Crowd lovin on Clinton

Check out RonKat Spearman

RonKat Spearman is one of the four or five guitarists in the George Clinton funkadelic crew. I first saw him playing with his solo project at the Ashkenaz, and let me tell ya, this guy is supa-hot! Check him out at http://www.ronkat.net/

George Clinton In Da House!

What a treat to see George Clinton! I've been funkin to his grooves for some 25 years, and somehow this was my first opportunity to see The Mothership land. There had to be some twenty musicians, singers and dancers onstage, plus a dizzying array of crew...all together creating one fine platter of funkadelic groove. The pavilion was jammed up full of funkiness and the set must have lasted almost three hours. I'm saying you haven't lived till you've seen this show live!

Re: Suzanne Sterling

I'm guessing it was a harmonium.

Mystic Beat Lounge Beckons

The Mystic Beat Lounge knows how to throw a party. Me thinks they've been schooling for years out at Burning Man, and true to BM founder Larry Harvey's vision, they have taken that knowledge back to their community.
Lasers combined with computer animation projected on the wall of Grace Pavilion beckon party-goers in. The hanging light sculptures insid the pavilion somehow work...it can't be easy to transorm what looks a bit like an airplane hanger into a festive club scene, they're huge but so is the hall...the edges are lined with booths selling festival merchandise, food, art, and clothes... The carpet sculptures towards the back are a nice touch, as are the couches, and this area is full even before the entertainment starts.
Backstage is lined with buses, I see some familiar ones from back in the day of early Burning Man. The crew is friendly, they introduce themselves readily, and all seem to be having a great time whilst busily handling the show details.
I'm especially entertained watching this guy with an Emperial Cruiser jumpsuit take his first few turns on a segway. He picks up the skill pretty quickly, and his huge smile almost shines brighter than his pink hair. I can't see the wheels from where I am, so it looks like he's floating Jetson style...good fun indeed!

The Popcorn People Rock!

Nothing says old-time street fair like fresh popped popcorn, but these guys put a modern twist on the deal...you order a bag, and they hand mix it, first with your choice of butter, olive oil or braggs, and then with your choice of some twenty different kinds of dry toppings...They beckon people in with free samples, the sunset offerings were maple-cinnamon-brown sugar-butter and coconut curry. These guys are sweet as could be, and the popcorn's good too...they use real butter and assure that it's BHT free...they also have a sign on front letting all know that this is a solar powered booth. I leave with a rockin' combo of butter, yeast and parmesan cheese...yummy!

Getting In...

I've covered many a festival in my day, and one thing that always rings true is that getting in on a media pass is never easy. I arrived around 8:00pm at the designated Grace Pavilion check in zone for my evening passes courtesy of Raychill, Goddess of Mystic Beat Lounge production crew. The smartly dressed gal at the will call booth asks for my I.D. to scan...I try to erase Big Brother visions from my head...she tells me I get all kinds of cool access passes, none of which she has, and that I need to go to the main gate. So much for my ultra-close parking job...but she tells me I might be able to pull right in at the gate.
Back in the car, drive a few blocks to the main entrance. There's a sign that says will call and artist check-in, but it points to the parking lot across the street and my spidey sense tells me that's not where I need to be. I turn around and park on the road, a bit shocked by the speed of the traffic whizzing by since there's so much activity on the road. There's a group of scruffy kids with dogs hanging out on a tarp right where I park, somehow they seem to be doing more hanging than going to the festival, but I trust everything's gonna be cool.
The will call line is pretty full, but only one guy is in front of the media check in, so I'm thinking this second pass stop will go quickly.
The guy in front of me has a bit of a sexy spanish accent, which he uses effusely as he tries to charm the two ladies in the window to give him his way. I hear bits and pieces of the conversation, something about him buying a bunch of the wrong tickets, now he wants to exchange them, the girls are telling him no, he's not having that...I'm just wondering why this issue is being addressed at the media booth...ten minutes later and apparently the rico suave charm works cause he seems to leave happy with his way.
I've got two separate passes for daytime and nightime, but another I.D. scan reveals I've got backstage passes but no ticket...I can hear the percussion of Mickey Hart in the background and now it's my turn to resolve a ticketing problem...Doesn't take too long, apparently I know the right names, and I'm given the backstage stickers and a pink wristband. Not sure if this is what I'll need, but at least I'm in...

Galaxy Glider

Have $10 burning a hole in your pocket? Looking for a high? Check out the Galaxy Glider, a huge metal functional art piece that takes you on quite a ride. This piece is located smack in the middle of the Healing Sanctuary. A sacred space is created, the traveler lays in a basket surrounded by caretakers, the traveler and musician are linked via a set of headphones and you're off!

Mickey Hart Band

All hail the greatness that is Mickey Hart. Former drummer for the Grateful Dead, Mickey certainly didn't stop when Jerry passed. He just kept on going and growing as an artist and a hugely influential being. The show last night on the main stage was impressive; I have never seen such a large percussion section in a rock band. And did it ever rock! Music ranged from new covers of Grateful Dead songs to amazing drum solos. The crowd was moving with the beat and happy to have a way to keep warm! If you go to the fest tonight, bring your favorite hoodie and maybe throw some socks under those sandals to keep your feet warm. ;)

At the Ambiotica, Late Night

I don't know how I missed this- Ok I do, I got caught up with the stars and flash of a a press pass+George Clinton- but this latin groove is the most authentic stuff I've heard all evening. By authentic, I don't mean pure to form, exact adherance to recipe, an unflinching fossilization of the 'proper' tradition- quite the opposite. These cats are free, having the kind of fun that only that middleman can. They aren't famous, there is only a small but dedicated crowd present- notably the man with the cowboy hat is still shaking his stuff religiously- and it's all about late night freeform booty-scootin'.

It's the looks on their faces whilst and whenst* they play- there are gleeful wagging tongues, eyes wide open and showing the whites on par with chicken eggs, a local feel, an acknowledgement from the musicians and the crowd that this is the best music hapening anywhere in the world at just this moment. . The clave player moves his cowbell to different levels, just for effect, and the crowd eats it up. The keys player bumps up and down on his stool, acting like he is trying to escape from a powerful magnet encased in his butt. It is clearly the after-party to be at, and I'm thankful that I have found my way back to my assignment, finally relaxing after many pleasant distractions. If you are here at the festival,or just watching via web cam, look for this spot. I'll help you out- after I press the 'publish' button on this post, look around- I'l be the one waving, saying, "Come in, come here- this is the place to be."

*Everyone needs a hobby.

Notes on Press Passes and George Clinton

Get one. A press pass. they are astounding.

I should admit I may have just talked myself into something I didn't deserve- at the Will Call booth, I put on my most official face and 'Expressed My Concerns' about accessibility- all I know is that I'm wearing a leopard printed wristband, one that seems to be 'go everywhere' pass- every door is open. I'm now sitting feet from the main stage at the George Clinton show, behind the fencing, where they fancy people sit.

It's a little asinine, I know, to feel privileged o sit on a cold stone floor no different from the main floor- even a little lamer because of the lack of great fun that is clearly washing over the audience- but still, the notion of VIP-ness is cool. To sit and blog so close to the action is a thrill.

Mr. Clinton is a midwesterner. Perhaps not by origin, sure, but he does- or at least did- live outside of Ann Arbor, MI, where I spent my formative years, and we would see him in the music stores, all blazing neon hair extensions flowing, every rock and roll inch of him in full force. You know how funky he looks on stage? He leaves the house to buy eggs and a carton of milk in the same uniform.

The rock here in the Pavilion is of full force as well- Massive screens are set up, people are screaming, George's clipped up dreads like a dandelion behind his head, as he spits, and I quote

"Skeet skeet skeet, skoo skoo, to the walls to the the floor, to the shake............Awww S***.....Are you ready to party? All that is good......is nasty..........."

In fine form tonight, my funkadelic Mr. Man.

Waylaid again

I have strayed again, dear readers. I was sucked in by the artwork- labryinths of intricate designs, canvases filled with patient colors and lines and detail, and it spit me out in, as the signs tell me, the Eco-village. Again the Inner kid takes over, and I'm drawn like a moth to the pretty lights and sounds eminating from the cloth geodesic dome set up in the back.

It is also again the Desi music- this time around played by a dreadlocked crew, and I'm not so concerned about the authenticity of it all- it just sounds good, and even the folks behind me are monkeying the the peculiar strains of vocal modulation so characteristic of the Indian classical style. It's silly, these dudes behind my head, but heck, I learned how to cook a proper curry from a woman named Isabel. They are even singing in proper form, a language I don't understand, as all I speak is Michigan. Mentioned before, know, but relevant.

I can't get over- and my Chicagoan friends will slay me for this, as they consume their pork-tubes and check their interest rates- the peaceful vibes of this whole endeavor. I can't believe I just used the phrase 'peaceful vibes' - from whenst* and where I originated- it was a cardinal sin to use anything even vaguely resembling 'hippie talk'- But I just palin feel comfortable, soothed, not in the least constructing a mental protection zone, wherin I have to worry about being jumped, extra-drunkness and associated behavior, violence in any fashion. It sounds silly and odd, I'm sure, but it is an indulgence, this vibe here at the festival. I don't really want to go home.

Ta Ki Na Ta Da

In classical Indian musical tradition, particularly as the Tablas are concerned, drum strokes follow syllables. That is to say, as you learn Tabla, Ghatam, or any other drum technique, you learn an assortment of syllables that are directly correlated to specific drumstrokes. Ta Ki Na Ta Da sounds remarkably like Ta Ki Na Ta Da when you strike it on the drums.

Ali Khan and Co. are doing this now, calling out a series of drum patterns as the Tabla player hits them in real time. This linkage, this symbiotic relationship, this synergy- I can't begin to conceive how they do it.

Still, though, I'm not entirely flabbergasted by what I'm seeing and hearing. Being a musician myself, I feel a need to be honest, and the music and stage presence is just a touch on the pandering side. They are kicking a bhangra beat, which I'm always terribly fond of, and it's getting people on the dance floor- but I want more sick rhythms, complex syncopation, stuff that blows my mind simply because I can't understand it. Stuff I can file away in my brain for later, examine, tease apart like a 7th grade frog dissection. I know they can do it- they are clearly proficient and talented musicians, but I guess it is part and parcel of fusion- things change.

But this is a real time blog, and still again, they have shifted gears- they are doing a number in 7/8, my absolute favorite time signature. Heck, I'm in no position to complain about fusion- my life is defined by the word. They really are mixing it up, crossing and expanding phrases, and I am assuaged into a groovy state once again. It works with the audience as well, and suddenly it feels good to be on the same page as everyone else. The slim gentlemen shaking his booty on the dance floor is, I'm almost certain, wearing the the cowboy hat previously donned by the lead singer, as he now sports a Derby hat and a Punjabi style shirt. I am enjoying this flux, these ebbs and tides that the Harmony Festival is offering. Did I mention how astounding this education I 'm getting is?

Waylaid By Outlaws

And by outlaws, I mean the Outlaw Dirvishes. They are on a sidestage, and, like a raven or a small child, I am attracted by all the pretty spinning lights. I am soon treated to all the pretty spinning ladies, donned in, once again, rather scantily designed costumes.

The Outlaw Dirvishes apparently have an arrangement with these women, whose names are Spiral, Brigette, and something else I don't quite capture, but the band leader does point out the obvious, that, in his own words,

"These women are HOT!"

They are hot. I don't want to come off as a greasy pervert, but you have no doubt realized that I am easily waylaid by scantily clad women. And it's fine it's great, we can say this here at the festival and not feel awkward.

Something about the conservative nature of the midwest -and often the east coast as well- prevents people from being open, from acknowledging the fact that sex exists, people are attractive, flirting is fun, and beautiful things are beautiful things, whether or not they are sanctioned by the bible. It is wonderful , and I can't help but wonder if the Industrious North has lost something by not acknowledging and embracing this freedom, this showing of creative energy, replacing it with financially successful pig- packaging plants and interest rates.

Still though, I must get back to the Ambiotica. Goodbye, attractive Hula-Hoop girls, dressed in gold lamay bikinis. Know that you are forever burned into my consciousness. I do so love California at this moment.

The Desis Rock- Ambiotica Louge Part 1

These are my people. Sort of.

I'm half Indian, the other half British, and when push comes to shove, I speak only Michigan. Still, though, if you haven't gleaned, my name really isn't Mr. Bean, it's a proper Indian to-do, a real Bengali mouthful, so you have to know I'm stoked to catch this fusion act, this dovetailing of East meets West so common in California. The band leader is adorned in a Wild Bill Hickock hat and rocking the Harmonium, Tablas kicking the backbeat- all while soundchecking. As he points out, it is typical Desi style- Desi being the Hindi word for 'Indian'- to be loose about this. And late. Desis are always late. I can't look at this man's hat without cracking up, this single manifestation of 'Cowboys and Indians.'

Ali Khan- the act that will follow the Burning Man film, is off the stage, finished with the soundcheck, and a man with a heavy French accent is telling us all about the film he has made, all about Burning Man. And for someone not yet indoctrinated to this, it is fascinating. The desert flats on site are absurdly vacant, and the purveyors of the festival are driving what looks like a pimped out version of Mr. Skywalker's Land Speeder. By 1989, they had gathered only 300 people for the festival, whenst* it was still held next to the Bay. Watching what I will diplomatically call 'scantily clad' women swinging fire around in huge arcs, years later, I am enraptured, I need to go, I have to see this phenomena. I know it has become a little spoiled, to the point where the fool who prematurely Burned the Man made national news, but still, I've got to get it before it goes. Maybe I can blog for that, too, though I doubt the desert will facilitate this. I'll have to ask Inflata-Bill. I'm sure he knows.

*I don't care if it's not a real word. I'm too fond of it to let it go. I'm going to use it as much as possible throughout the evening.

Virtual Becomes Reality

It is actual, I am here, I have crawled my way backstage at the Harmony Festival. My Ether counterparts are here somewhere, including the elusive Inflata-Bill, and it feels covert and not just a little High Tech and Mission Impossible to be posting, considering I haven't a clue about what the people who hired me to do this look like.

On a complete aside, I have a confession to make. I am a corn-fed midwesterner, born and bred, and have only been in California less than a year. We of the midwestalways envisioned the West Coast to be Ocean Pacific surfwear, bleach blond groovy-ness, and cops wearing Ponch-style sunglasses and beige uniforms.

Imagine my surprise to find out it was all true, exactly to form- even the CHP- CHiPs really, still wear the type of motorcycle helmets redolent of The Great Gazoo on old Flintstone episodes. It's all a little surreal, the bonafide hippies, the colorful tye dye prints, and the big furry animal hats being sold by the vendors. Walking backstage, I came across- I kid you not- Wavy Gravy, the real deal, a person who sticks out most in my mind as a Ben and Jerry flavor. He is carrying a stuffed platypus on a stick. Again, I kid you not, but you dear reader, are probably acclimated to this. I am not, and it is thrilling.

So, I move now to a film presentation on another legendary West Coast staple, one that ranks among the foremost in the panacea of West Coast legend that circulates in the Great White midwest- the Burning Man Festival. What an education I am getting.

Suzanne Sterling

It's unfortunate that the press booth never quite got setup yesterday. Because I didn't get to tell you about the sheer awesome-ness that is Suzanne Sterling. Playing on the Goddess Stage is exactly the right place for this band, as they combined music, beauty, and amazing instrumentation for a show that had people dancing and cheering. Plus, the main singer, who I assume to be Suzanne, plays a sort of table accordian, which my fellow blogger Mister Bean can probably put a name to. (edit: Mr Bean rightly named this as a harmonium)

Hopi Snake Ceremony with the Cousins from Hawaii

Radford, the Hopi Snake priest was called back home, but his adopted cousins from Hawaii filled his place. We became the snakes, our spines our consciousness twisting and writhing in accord with those around us.

There were two major messages that came out of this session. The first came through a Healing Ceremony where you are lead through the process of forgiving yourself and those in your life that need forgiveness. Letting go of the stress and the anger; filling the void with white light and love.

The second message came through a ceremony borrowed from the native Hawaiians; reminding ourselves of the connection that exists between us all. This came in a very physical sense; you touched your partner's heart, feel the rhythm of their breathing and the flow of the earth coming through your feet and out your upraised hands. Touch is something reserved in our society and generally frowned upon. This lack of physical connection allows our minds to forget the connections that run between us all.

Part of this connection is being here, now; aware of those around you and aware of yourself. Replaying the "old tapes" the negative memories causes a further disconnect and this is what we must try to avoid. So enjoy yourself, whether you're here at the Harmony Fest or at home. Enjoy yourself, enjoy your family, and remember to just be.

If Only Food Were Wireless

It flabbergasts me, this wireless world.

First, let me welcome you to the live blog coverage of the Harmony Festival. I do not know if there are web-cams, if you are at home at your laptop, or even watching yourself on your blackberry via live web-cam while reading about the festival you are currently attending. Should you be any of the aforementioned, look for me- I’m the guy who looks like a Pakistani Shel Silverstein, although I probably am wearing what appears to be a black dress sock on my head. Mosquitos, you know. I’m probably over by the press tent. Look, I’m waving now.

OK, I am ,quite frankly, full of it. It is 9:39 in the morning, and the festival doesn’t start for another 4 hours at least. Still, though, wireless is astounding- I’m writing this entry now as a test sequence to send to a man I’ve never met and only known to me as “Inflata-Bill” so that he may upload the entry via email to multiple-author blog he’s created, which will then feed directly- via RSS or Atom platform- directly to the Harmony Website, which you are ostensibly reading right now. Didn’t that sound fancy? I have no idea what I just said, but unless you are the ethereal and omnipotent Inflata-Bill, you will just have to take my word for it.

At any rate, I will likely be by the press tent, assuming they are providing free food. If not, find me over in the food court and say hello, chit chat, give me your opinions on the food, the festival, the music, the food, the people and the food. We’ll stick it up on the blog. You can even watch me type it. I’ll sit below a web cam and train it on the screen, so you can dial up the Harmony site and watch me type it via blackberry. Let us just hope when we close that wireless loop, we don’t accidentally sever off a chunk of the universe trained-in on itself, a HF parallel universe as it were. The festival promises to be heaps of fun, but if we do sever it apart from the natural space/time continuum, the food will eventually run out and we will have no where to empty the port-o-potties. See you there!

Black Sheep Bellydance

Put on your finger cymbals and get ready to let your inner child play! BlackSheep Bellydance took to the Goddess Stage for an amazing American Tribal Style Bellydance show. This style is based on group and solo improvisation using a set of practiced moves, but you'd never know it by watching the seemingly telepathic connection of this group. The costumes, the colors, the dance! Though I didn't recognize the songs used at this particular event, the group dances to the music of greats such as DJ Cheb I Sabbah who is performing at the Techno-Tribal bash on Saturday night.

I've taken the intro course with Seba and MJ, assisted by the level 2 and 3 gals; it is a life-changing experience. You will never meet a group of ladies so supporting of each other and sure of themselves. I have never felt so comfortable in my own skin and the exercise is great too!
